Europe: Slight uptick in business travel in H1 2024

✈ AirPlus International reported a 1.7% increase in European business travel spend and a 1.6% rise in trips for H1 2024 compared to 2023. Average advance booking jumped to 28.8 days before departure, up from 26.3 days in 2023. Female travelers booked even earlier, 32 days ahead of travel, versus males at 27.2. The average trip length dropped slightly to 5.8 days, and one-day trips decreased to 6.7% from 6.8%.

Date set for EU’s new entry and exit scheme

📅 EU's new biometric Entry-Exit System (EES) starts on November 10, 2024, affecting travelers without EU passports by requiring fingerprints and photographs. Passport stamping will be replaced by digital checks. In the first half of 2025, ETIAS will be introduced, requiring travelers from 60 visa-free countries, including the UK, to pay €7 for electronic travel authorization to enter 30 European countries.

Room key in Apple Wallet by dormakaba

📱 Apple Wallet now allows guests to skip the lobby with room keys stored on their iPhone or Apple Watch. Travel isn’t dead. It’s just taking a vacation

🏖️ On August 20, 2024, U.S. CEOs warned about declining consumer financial health impacting travel, following the highest unemployment rate since fall 2021. Despite this, the Conference Board reported more Americans plan vacations now compared to last year. U.S. hotel occupancy rates for the week ending August 10 were also up year-over-year, with over 82,000 locations monitored by CoStar Group.
