US hotel occupancy and construction both decline in September

🏨 U.S. hotel performance weakened in September 2025. Occupancy dropped 1.9% to 63.4%, marking seven consecutive months of decline. ADR slightly decreased by 0.1% to $162.69, while RevPAR fell 2.1% to $103.19. Construction also slowed with a 12.3% drop, reaching 137,956 rooms. New York City led with 86.6% occupancy, contrasting New Orleans (48.5%) and Houston (55.6%). Despite high costs, more rooms are under construction now than post-Great Recession.

CoStar: U.S. Hotel Construction Fell for Ninth Consecutive Month

🏨 U.S. hotel rooms under construction have declined for nine consecutive months as of September 2025, reports CoStar. Construction volume fell 12.3% to 137,956 rooms compared to September 2024. Final planning dropped by 3.5% to 258,836 rooms, and planning decreased 2.6% to 327,304 rooms. Isaac Collazo notes the drop is over 80,000 rooms below the Q3 2020 peak, citing uncertainty, high costs, and cautious developers. Still, more construction is ongoing than post-Great Recession.
