  • Tony Loeb
  • 2 April 2025
🍽 In hospitality, frontline roles typically have higher turnover rates than management due to the career ladder structure. Successful strategies to reduce turnover include competitive wages, performance bonuses, self-scheduling, improved PTO policies, mental health support, career development, internal promotions, and a strong company culture. Economic uncertainty and efficiency improvements like self-service kiosks result in cautious hiring in the food service industry.

Not a crisis yet

📍 U.S. tourism spending is 10% above 2019 levels but shows signs of cooling in 2025, with a 2.5% decline in lodging and tourism-related spending, and a 6% drop in airline spending compared to 2024. Easter's shift to April 20 may affect early-year data. Airfare prices fell by 4% year-over-year in February. Lower-income households, experiencing weaker wage growth, are cutting back most significantly. New York, Nevada, and Texas observed fewer long-distance visitors early in the year. Conversely, overseas spending by Americans increased by 2.6% in January and February. Skift Research highlights policy changes, particularly tariffs and immigration, that could halve U.S. travel growth, with a recession further threatening the industry.
